Flowers for Old North Durham

Flowers for Old North Durham | Durham Flower Studio

Old North Durham sits north of the Norfolk Southern line — a late-1800s streetcar suburb that’s become one of the most deliberately artsy neighborhoods in the city. The character comes from preservation-first thinking: original Queen Anne and Craftsman homes kept intact, front porches still anchoring street life, Geer Street transformed into a creative corridor without losing its working-class roots. The neighborhood association has been protecting the character of these streets since 1981. Residents chose here deliberately — they host dinner parties in historic homes, back arts collectives, and know their neighbors. We design flowers for old-north-durham the way the neighborhood lives: with craft, restraint, and local memory.

Flowers for homes in Old North Durham

The homes here earn slow attention. Wraparound porches, wide mouldings, fireplace mantels that still work. When a Victorian cottage gets restored in Old North Durham, the owners aren’t chasing luxury — they’re honoring what was already there. That ethos shows up in how they host. A dinner table set for eight, not thirty. A centerpiece that lets conversation move across it. A mantel piece that complements the room’s own scale. We compose for these homes the same way: seasonal editing, proportion first, no piling on of stems.

For the Geer Street district

Geer Street Garden at 644 Foster Street opened in a converted gas station and became the neighborhood’s everyday gathering place for new American food and craft cocktails. Cocoa Cinnamon at 420 West Geer Street roasts coffee with international spiced-drink traditions — Mexican, Italian, North African — morning through evening. The Old North Bar (316 West Geer) took over the former Accordion Club and built a small neighborhood bar around draft beers and a Hawk Dogs food cart partnership. Old North Durham Park at 310 West Geer anchors the Strawberry Festival, porch concerts, and neighborhood events throughout the year. Observable Universe, an arts collective in the area, offers studio space and art-therapy programming for local artists and caregivers.

These are the rooms and people we design for: restaurant openings, gallery receptions, studio tours, artist collaborations. When a new concept lands on Geer Street or a collective needs installation florals for a public event, we’re the studio that understands the craft and the culture at the same time.

Occasions we compose for

  • Restaurant and gastropub openings — opening arrangements, table florals, and entrance installations for Geer Street launches
  • Gallery receptions and Third Friday openings — statement pieces scaled to the room, composed to work with the art
  • Home entertaining in historic renovations — centerpieces and entryway pieces for Victorian cottage dinner parties and art salon evenings
  • Duke faculty receptions and milestone events — arrangements for faculty dinners, research celebrations, and departmental gatherings nearby
  • Neighborhood civic events — Strawberry Festival installations, ONDNA gatherings, porch concerts, community fundraisers
  • Ongoing home and studio arrangements — weekly subscription florals from our studio

How we work

We’re a flower studio, not a floristry pipeline. European training taught us technique — how stems age, how color holds, how structure earns its keep. But this isn’t about imposing European formality on a neighborhood that doesn’t want it. It’s about using that training to make quiet, intelligent choices: a few well-chosen stems over a pile of good ones, seasonal material over year-round sameness, hand-tied arrangements that show the work rather than hide it.

We hand-deliver throughout Durham. For ongoing arrangements at home or in a studio, our subscription service refreshes weekly or bi-weekly with what’s in season.
